Dirt – The realistic “dirt” effect is achieved with surprising ease! Simply crush Oreo cookies in a small plastic zip-top bag using a rolling pin or your hands. Once finely crushed, sprinkle this delicious cookie “dirt” generously around the base of your tombstones and trees on the cake, creating an authentic graveyard floor.

Thin lines are much more fragile and will break and snap easily during handling and decorating. Once piped, place the baking sheet with your chocolate pieces into the refrigerator to chill and set completely. They can chill overnight if needed, ensuring they are perfectly firm before you handle them.

Instructions

Bake the Marbled Cake

  • Prepare your cake pan for an easy release. Lightly spray the bottom of your 9×13-inch pan with non-stick baking spray, then line it with a piece of parchment paper cut to fit. This ensures the cake comes out cleanly and makes cleanup much simpler.
  • Prepare your cake batters according to the box directions. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer, prepare the chocolate cake batter. For the orange marbled effect, mix 2 cups of the white cake batter in a small separate bowl and stir in orange food coloring until you achieve your desired vibrant Halloween orange. Note: If using a deeper pan (e.g., 3 inches deep), you might need to use two boxes of cake mix to ensure the pan is adequately filled. Most standard pans are 2 inches deep.
  • Now, create the beautiful marble design! Carefully spoon alternating dollops of chocolate and orange batter into the prepared cake pan. Try to layer the batter on top of different areas, allowing it to naturally spread.
  • Once all the batter is in the pan, take a skewer, chopstick, or butter knife. Gently pull lines from the center of the pan outwards, then create a few slight swirls around the pan. This technique will create those stunning marbled patterns. To remove air bubbles and help level the batter, gently rap the cake pan down on your counter several times.
  • Bake the cake according to the directions on your cake mix box. Most standard 9×13-inch pans typically require a 350-degree Fahrenheit oven for about 28 minutes. If you are using a pan deeper than 2 inches, reduce the baking temperature to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for a longer duration, around 55 minutes, checking periodically. Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake; if it comes out clean, your cake is perfectly baked and ready.

Prepare Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • In a large mixing bowl or a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, beat the softened butter and vegetable shortening on high speed for 5 minutes until the mixture is incredibly creamy and light. This aeration is key to fluffy frosting.
  • Reduce the mixer speed to low. Gradually add the 10 cups of powdered sugar, one cup at a time, allowing each addition to fully incorporate before adding more. Continue mixing until the frosting is smooth and lump-free.

Frost the Cake

  • Allow the cake to cool in its pan for 10 minutes after baking, then carefully remove it and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. For best decorating results, cool the cake in the refrigerator for at least two hours or, ideally, overnight. I find it most convenient to bake the cake on one day and decorate it the next. This allows any steam to escape, resulting in a firmer cake, and ensures the frosting adheres beautifully to a chilled surface.
  • To prevent the cake from sliding during decoration, place a small dollop of chocolate frosting on a piece of cardboard (cut to fit the base of the cake) on a tray or cutting board. Then, carefully set your cooled cake on top of this frosting “glue.”
  • Using a small offset spatula, apply the chocolate frosting evenly over the entire top and sides of the cake, smoothing it out as much as possible. Once frosted, return the cake to the refrigerator to chill while you prepare your chocolate decorations. This will help the frosting set firmly.

Make Chocolate Decorations: Tombstones, Bones, Fence, Gate, and Tree

  • Prepare your piping surface. Cut a sheet of parchment paper to fit neatly inside a large baking sheet. Slide the downloadable chocolate design template (for the fence, gate, and tree) underneath the parchment paper.
  • Melt the chocolate for decorating. Using a double boiler, combine 24 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips and a teaspoon of vegetable oil in a heatproof bowl set over simmering (not boiling) water. Stir gently until completely melted and smooth. IMPORTANT: Ensure no water splashes into the melting chocolate, as this will cause it to seize or “freeze” into an unusable state. You may need to add a tiny bit more vegetable oil to achieve a perfectly smooth, pipable consistency. Once melted, transfer the chocolate into a zip-top bag fitted with a small round piping tip (a Wilton size 5 tip works perfectly).
  • Working quickly, pipe the graveyard fence, gate, and tree onto the parchment paper, using the design template as your guide. You can also create your own unique designs if you wish! PRO TIP: Pipe the chocolate fairly thick, going over the lines multiple times. Thin lines are prone to breaking and snapping more easily during handling and decoration. For the tombstones, use a candy mold and fill the cavities with melted semi-sweet chocolate. For the bones, melt the white candy melts (in the microwave according to package directions) and fill the bone cavities. Once piped and molded, place all chocolate pieces into the refrigerator to chill and set until firm. They are fine to chill overnight if desired.

Assemble Your Graveyard Halloween Cake

  • Begin assembling your graveyard scene. Crush Oreo cookies in a small zip-top bag to create your “dirt.” Carefully pop the set chocolate tombstones and bones from their molds. Arrange these tombstones and bones strategically on your frosted cake, then sprinkle the crushed Oreo “dirt” generously around them. Next, carefully position the chocolate tree on the cake. You might find it helpful to pipe a small amount of frosting at the base of the tree to help it stand upright. Finally, apply a thin layer of chocolate buttercream to the lower portion of your chocolate fence and gate pieces; this will act as a “glue” to secure them. Place these pieces around the outside edges of your cake, breaking off smaller fence sections if needed to fit perfectly.
  • Your fully decorated Halloween Graveyard Cake will hold up beautifully in the refrigerator for at least 1 day, and often up to 2 days. For the best presentation, I recommend decorating it either on the day of your party or the evening before. For an extra fun and interactive element, I’ve even had guests assist with the final decorating touches during the party, which was a huge hit!
  • NOTE: Please be aware that the delicate chocolate decorations can soften or melt on a particularly hot day. To ensure your masterpiece remains pristine, I highly recommend keeping the cake chilled in the refrigerator until it is ready to be served to your eagerly awaiting guests!
